A Moment in Taipei · Golden hour

Somewhere Above Taipei

Feels like a slow film scene, with the whole city below you.

In Kai's words

The Story

We meet at Taipei Zoo station as the light starts to turn, and ride the Maokong Gondola up together. The ride gives you twenty minutes with nothing to do but look out, and that's when people stop performing for the camera. I photograph you through the glass with the city reflected around you.

At the top we wander the tea terraces in the last of the sun. I shoot into the light, so everything turns gold. We ride back down as Taipei switches its lights on. It's slow and unhurried, and the photos come out calm because you are.

I'm Kai

Photographer · Taipei, Taiwan

Soft, cinematic portraits that feel like stills from a slow film.

Before portraits I spent six years shooting stills on film sets. I photograph people the way a film frames a scene: wide, quiet and in long light.

The highlight of our honeymoon. Riding up as the sun went down felt like a film, and the photos through the gondola window are unreal.

Kai is so calm that I relaxed straight away. I didn't expect to love photos of myself this much.

Worth every minute. The tea-hill photos at sunset are now framed in our hallway.
